Best Diablo 2 Runewords to Trade
Updated 4 September 2026 · Ladder Season 15
Sixteen runewords account for most of the high-value trading in Diablo 2. Knowing the rune list is the easy part — it's published everywhere. What decides whether a finished copy is worth one high rune or six is the base it was made in and how its variable rolls landed. This guide covers all three for each.
Runes and base types below are the current ones. Where a runeword has a roll range that swings its value, that's called out, because that's the part a listing screenshot has to show you.
The top tier
Enigma — Jah + Ith + Ber, body armour, level 65. Teleport on any character, plus a strength bonus that scales with your level and a large magic find roll. It's the most build-defining runeword in the game and the reason Jah and Ber sit at the top of the rune ladder.
Base: everything. You want maximum defence for the lowest strength requirement, which is why Archon Plate is the standard target, with Mage Plate, Dusk Shroud, and Wyrmhide as the low-strength alternatives. An Enigma in a Breast Plate is worth a fraction of one in an Archon Plate. Ethereal bases carry a premium for the defence.
Infinity — Ber + Mal + Ber + Ist, polearms and spears, level 63. A level 12 Conviction aura that breaks lightning and other immunities for your whole party, plus a large enemy lightning resistance reduction. It's a mercenary weapon in practice.
Base: an ethereal four-socket polearm — Cryptic Axe, Thresher, or Giant Thresher. Ethereal matters here specifically because mercenary weapons don't lose durability, so you get the ethereal damage bonus with none of the downside. An ethereal Infinity is the single biggest base premium in the game.
Roll driver: the enemy lightning resistance reduction and enhanced damage rolls.
Chains of Honor — Dol + Um + Ber + Ist, body armour, level 63. Skills, heavy resistances, damage to demons and undead, and life steal in one armour. The default caster armour for anyone not running Enigma.
Base: same logic as Enigma — high defence, low strength requirement. Archon Plate or a low-strength elite armour.
Grief — Eth + Tir + Lo + Mal + Ral, swords and axes, level 59. A flat damage addition of 340–400 that ignores the weapon's own damage scaling entirely, which is why it hits so hard on fast weapons.
Base: Phase Blade is the classic — indestructible and among the fastest swords in the game. Berserker Axe is the alternative for builds that want the axe speed.
Roll driver: the 340–400 damage roll. A 400 Grief is a materially different item from a 340, and the gap shows up in the price.
The staples every build wants
Spirit — Tal + Thul + Ort + Amn, swords and shields, level 25. Two skills, big faster-cast-rate, faster-hit-recovery, and mana. It's available almost immediately and it stays relevant into the endgame, which makes it the highest-volume runeword on any trade board.
Base: a four-socket Crystal Sword for the cheap version; a Monarch shield if you can meet the strength.
Roll driver: faster cast rate rolls 25–35% and mana rolls 89–112. A 35/112 Spirit is worth several times a 25/89, and at a fresh ladder start people will pay real runes for a max-roll one.
Insight — Ral + Tir + Tal + Sol, polearms, staves and missile weapons, level 27. A Meditation aura that solves mana for the entire early and mid game. Almost every character runs one on a mercenary.
Base: a four-socket polearm for the mercenary; ethereal if you can find it.
Roll driver: Meditation rolls level 12–17. That's a wide band on the only stat anyone cares about, so always ask for the number.
Heart of the Oak — Ko + Vex + Pul + Thul, staves and maces, level 55. Three skills, high faster-cast-rate, and a large all-resistances roll. The default caster weapon for anyone not building around an elemental-specific alternative.
Base: a four-socket Flail is the standard, for the low strength and dexterity requirement.
Roll driver: faster cast rate 30–40% and all resistances 30–40. Both matter; both should be in the screenshot.
Call to Arms — Amn + Ral + Mal + Ist + Ohm, weapons, level 57. Battle Orders and Battle Command as charges, which is a flat life and mana increase for any character. It lives on a weapon swap, so its own damage is irrelevant.
Base: anything cheap with the right socket count. Nobody pays for the base on a CtA.
Roll driver: the Battle Orders level. Since the weapon itself never gets used, this is essentially the only stat the item has.
Fortitude — El + Sol + Dol + Lo, weapons and body armour, level 59. Huge enhanced damage on the weapon version; on the armour version it's the standard physical-damage body armour, with a large enhanced defence roll and resistances.
Base: high-defence body armour for the armour version. It's the most common mercenary armour in the game.
Roll driver: the enhanced defence and all-resistance rolls on the armour version.
The specialists
Faith — Ohm + Jah + Lem + Eld, missile weapons, level 65. A Fanaticism aura that boosts attack speed and damage for you and your party.
Base: a Grand Matron Bow for Amazons, or a Matriarchal or Diamond Bow otherwise.
Roll driver: Fanaticism rolls level 12–15. That four-level band is the whole value of the item.
Dream — Io + Jah + Pul, helms and shields, level 65. A level 15 Holy Shock aura. Two Dreams — one helm, one shield — is the foundation of the Hammerdin-adjacent lightning builds, which is why it's usually traded as a pair.
Base: a Diadem for the magic-find version, or a high-defence elite helm; Monarch for the shield.
Roll driver: all resistances and the magic find roll.
Exile — Vex + Ohm + Ist + Dol, Paladin shields, level 57. A Defiance aura, Life Tap on striking, and it repairs itself, which is unusual and useful.
Base: Vortex Shield for the low strength requirement; ethereal is fine here precisely because the runeword repairs.
Roll driver: Defiance rolls level 13–16, plus the enhanced defence roll.
Phoenix — Vex + Vex + Lo + Jah, weapons and shields, level 65. A Redemption aura and a large enemy fire resistance reduction. The shield version is the one people build for fire casters.
Roll driver: the Redemption aura level and the enhanced damage or defence roll.
Last Wish — Jah + Mal + Jah + Sur + Jah + Ber, swords, hammers and axes, level 65. Six runes including three Jahs and a Ber makes it one of the most expensive runewords in the game. Level 17 Might aura, heavy crushing blow, and chance to cast Life Tap on striking.
Roll driver: the enhanced damage range is unusually wide. Given what the runes cost, never buy one without seeing the number.
Beast — Ber + Tir + Um + Mal + Lum, axes, scepters and hammers, level 63. A Fanaticism aura on an item any class can carry, plus a large strength bonus. Frequently made as a swap weapon or for a mercenary.
Roll driver: the strength and enhanced damage rolls.
Mosaic — Mal + Gul + Amn, claws, level 53. Added in patch 2.6, and the runeword that made Martial Arts Assassins a real endgame build: finishing moves have a chance not to consume their charges, which stacks when you dual-wield two of them.
Base: claws with high base damage and useful Assassin skill bonuses — Runic Talons and Feral Claws are the targets. Because they're traded as a pair, the base skills on both matter.
How to trade these
The pattern is the same throughout: cheap runes plus an excellent base and a max roll can beat expensive runes in a bad base. When you list a finished runeword, put the base, whether it's ethereal, and every variable roll in the post. When you buy one, ask for a screenshot of the full item, not the name.
If you're assembling rather than buying finished, price the runes against the Diablo 2 rune values guide and check live asks on the Diablo 2 prices pages first — mid-season, buying the runes is usually cheaper than buying someone else's finished work, and you get to pick the base.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most valuable runeword in Diablo 2?
Enigma, made from Jah + Ith + Ber in a body armour. It grants Teleport to any class, which changes how every character moves through the game, and it permanently consumes two of the top runes. Infinity is close behind for anyone playing a caster that needs immunities broken.
Does the base item matter for a runeword?
Enormously. The runes fix the runeword's own stats, but the base contributes its defence or damage, its speed, its strength requirement, and whether it's ethereal. A finished runeword in a top base can be worth several times the same runeword in a poor one.
Should I buy runes or a finished runeword?
Buying runes and making it yourself is usually cheaper, and you choose the base. Buying finished means you can inspect the variable rolls before you pay. If the runeword has a wide roll range — Insight's Meditation level, Grief's damage, Last Wish's enhanced damage — buying finished and inspecting is worth the premium.
What does ethereal mean for runeword bases?
Ethereal items have higher base damage or defence but lose durability, which normally makes them unusable long-term. Mercenary weapons don't degrade, so ethereal polearms are the premium base for Infinity and Insight. Self-repairing runewords like Exile also work well ethereal.
