Diablo 4 Boss Carry Etiquette: How to Give and Get Carries Without Drama

Good Diablo 4 boss carry etiquette comes down to three things: agree on every term before the boss spawns, pay in in-game gold or items using a split both sides accept, and never promise or expect specific drops. Most carry disputes come from something one person assumed and the other never agreed to. Settle the details in chat first and the run itself is usually the easy part.
This guide covers both sides: running carries for gold and buying them for your own character.
What a carry actually is
A carry is a deal where a stronger player kills a boss, or helps kill it, so a weaker or newer character gets the kill and the loot roll. The carried player might be gearing an alt, catching up late in a season, or trying to finish a ladder step without the damage to do it alone.
Carries usually fall into a few common shapes:
- Per kill: a fixed fee for each boss kill.
- Bulk runs: a set number of kills for one price, often discounted.
- Bring your own materials: the buyer supplies the summoning materials and pays a smaller fee for the carrier's time.
- Carrier supplies everything: the carrier brings materials too and charges more to cover them.
For the Season 14 boss ladder, the summoning material is Lair Keys, so whose keys get used is the first thing to settle.
Agree on terms before anyone opens the fight
Put the whole deal in writing, in whisper or on the trade board listing, before you join a party. A short message covering these points prevents most arguments:
- Which boss and how many kills. Be exact. "A few runs" means different things to different people.
- Who supplies the keys or materials. If the buyer brings them, confirm they actually have them before you start.
- Price and currency. Gold, a specific item, or a mix. Point to the agreed amount, not "the usual."
- Payment timing. Up front, per kill, or split. See the next section.
- What the buyer should do during the fight. Some carriers want the buyer to stay alive in a corner. Others want them to help. Say which.
- What happens on a failed attempt or disconnect. Decide now, not after it happens.
If the other person will not agree to clear terms, skip the deal. Vague carries are where scams and bad blood start.
Paying for a carry with gold or items
Payment timing is the biggest trust question in any carry, because one side always has to go first. Common fair arrangements:
| Arrangement | How it works | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Pay per kill | Buyer pays after each kill | First deals between strangers |
| Half up front | Half before the first kill, half after the last | Bulk runs |
| Full up front | Buyer pays everything before starting | Carriers with a long, visible history |
| Materials as deposit | Buyer's keys count as their commitment, fee paid after | Bring-your-own-keys deals |
Per kill payment is the safest default with someone you have never traded with. Neither side can lose more than one kill's worth.
A few payment habits that apply anywhere you find carries:
- Use the in-game trade window. Do not drop gold or items on the ground and hope the other person picks them up.
- Check the trade window before accepting. Confirm the amount and item match what you agreed.
- Keep a screenshot of the agreed terms. It helps if you report someone later.
- Price items honestly. If you are paying with an item instead of gold, check its value on /prices first so neither side feels cheated. Charms and Seals are tradeable and are sometimes used as payment, but agree on the exact piece.
One hard line: buying or selling carries, items, runes or gold for real money breaks Blizzard's terms of use and can get an account actioned. Keep every carry to in-game gold and items. If someone asks for payment outside the game, decline.
Etiquette during the run
Once the deal is set, both sides have a job.
If you are the carrier:
- Be ready before you invite. Gear set, potions stocked, no stopping to sort your stash mid-session.
- Tell the buyer exactly where to stand and what to avoid.
- Do not rush between kills so fast that the buyer cannot pick up their loot.
- If something goes wrong on your side, such as a wipe from your own mistake, own it and redo the kill without extra charge.
- Stay polite with buyers who are new to the fight. They paid for help, not commentary.
If you are being carried:
- Follow the carrier's instructions, even if you think you could help more.
- Do not wander into mechanics that can wipe the group.
- Have your keys or materials in your inventory before the run starts, not in your stash.
- Pick up your loot quickly and say when you are ready for the next kill.
- Do not leave mid-session without telling the carrier, especially on bulk deals.
A quick "ready" in chat before each summon keeps things moving and avoids the carrier opening a fight while you are still in town.
Loot expectations after the kill
The buyer is paying for the kill and the loot roll that comes with it. That means the chance at a drop, not a guaranteed item.
Keep these expectations clear:
- Carriers do not owe the buyer their own drops. Unless the deal explicitly says the carrier hands over certain loot, what drops for the carrier stays with the carrier.
- Nobody can promise a specific drop. A carrier who "guarantees" a particular item is overselling.
- Mythic Uniques cannot change hands. They are account-bound and never tradeable. Any carry offer built around handing you a Mythic Unique is either a misunderstanding or a scam.
- Bad luck is not a refund reason. If the kills happened as agreed, the deal is done, even if the buyer got nothing they wanted.
If a buyer wants specific tradeable items rather than chances at them, it is often cheaper to just buy the item. Check /prices to see what drives its value and whether it trades at all, then compare that to what the carries would cost.
Carriers who run many kills will also see a lot of junk. A tight loot filter helps you spot the drops worth reselling without stopping to inspect everything between summons.
Handling disconnects, wipes and disputes
Things go wrong even in good carries. How you handle it is what builds or burns your reputation.
- Disconnects: If either side drops before a kill, the usual etiquette is to regroup and continue. If the buyer's keys were spent on a kill they missed through no fault of their own, the fair move is a free redo or a partial refund. Agree on this up front.
- Wipes: If the carrier wipes the group, the carrier should cover the redo. If the buyer ignored instructions and caused it, the buyer usually covers the replacement materials.
- Payment not sent: Stop running kills, ask once politely, and keep your screenshots. Do not keep carrying in the hope they pay later.
- Carrier vanishes after payment: This is why per kill payment is the safest default with strangers. Report the account through Blizzard's in-game tools and on whatever platform you met them.
The trade board on this site lists gold, runes and items only, and every trader is a Battle.net-verified BattleTag, which makes it easier to know who you are dealing with. Trades and carries still happen in-game, so the same habits apply: clear terms, small first deals, and never real money as payment.

Frequently asked questions
Who should supply the Lair Keys for a Season 14 boss carry?
There is no fixed rule, so agree on it before anyone opens the fight. The usual pattern is that the person being carried brings their own keys and pays a smaller fee, or the carrier supplies keys and charges more. State which deal you are offering in your first message.
Can a carrier give me a Mythic Unique that drops during the run?
No. Mythic Uniques are account-bound in Diablo 4 and cannot be traded. Anyone who offers a carry with a guaranteed Mythic Unique handoff is either confused or running a scam. Pay for kills and attempts, not for specific drops.
Is paying for a boss carry with real money against the rules?
Yes. Buying or selling carries, items, runes or gold for real money breaks Blizzard's terms of use and can get an account actioned. Keep carries to in-game gold and items only.
